The handwritten copy of the tale, entitled Tallow Candle, and dedicated to a vicar's widow named Bunkeflod who had lived across from Andersen's home, had been left seemingly untouched at the bottom of one of the boxes.
It was published immediately, so fortunately I could read it in danish. Reading the story it is elementary that H.C. Andersen never intended to publish it. Although the story has all the hallmarks of Andersen´s genius, it is more an initial story-sketch, presented for Mrs Bunkefold to get a private, critical and sincere opinion by somebody that Andersen trusted. The literally hyenas of his time were just as bloodthirsty as they are today.
It is evident that Andersen did not forget about his first story-experiment, but that he just did not want to publish it.
It is tangential to grave robbery, to publish the story without proper consideration and polishing.
